Digital Painting

Remember when I was trying to learn to be a stronger digital painter?  Well,  I gave up on that at one point.  It was for multiple reasons.  Somewhere near the top of the list was major frustration in getting the look I wanted.
Anyway, I got this commission to do a portrait (as seen above) and they wanted to digitally painted.  So, here I am struggling with the frustration of digital painting in Photoshop, when I stumbled upon a new brush (to me, not to photoshop) and it did EXACTLY what I wanted.  So, after about four failed attempts at getting this to look right, I got it to look right.  So here is a successful digital portrait for a relocating boss.  Who was apparently loved by his company.

This is what it's all about: Giving back

The link above connects to an article talking about what the Pop Culture Classroom is doing for the Colorado community.  It's an amazing thing, and keeping kids learning and excited about reading!  I am VERY proud to be involved with such an organization.

Playing with character

I did a series of these "flour" bags.  I was trying to see what I could do with character and action in a sack of flour.  This is a constant test for animators for many large feature animation companies.  I decided I'd try my hand.  I did all these in photoshop, and had a great time.  I didn't do a lot of revisions and redraws on these.  I wanted to see what I could get out of this without any revisions.  Any animation companies out there need an animator?!

WORLD SERIES 2015!!!

Ok, so I am not a HUGE world series fan, but I felt inspired to do something comic book related to it.  Considering that we have the big city vs. the team from the mid-west, I thought I'd do a series of images that is Clark Kent vs. Kal-El.  This is setting up the series.  Stay tuned for more!

Pen...just Pen

In the interest of Inktober, I decided to post this little piece up.  I am working on a little intro comic for a book series a very good friend is writing.  This is the character in the intro.  I did this entirely with a Pentel Slicci 0.25   I hope you enjoy it!

Geneva Glen Young Alumni Beer Festival: Year 3!

As you can read on the two labels, these are inspired by the music of Geneva Glen.  The name comes from the Banjo Man, as he's been labeled at Geneva Glen, and one of the fan favorite songs.  The Geneva Glen Young Alumni group does this every year and these labels are always a blast to do. With this being the third year of the contest, I feel like I am finally finding the look, feeling, and idea of this contest.  I had a great time working with Marty "the Party" Galloway this year and I can't wait to give these amazing brews a taste.  Enjoy the labels!  You can see the other labels, from previous years and this one, at the Geneva Glen Young Alumni Group Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/GGYoungAlumni

SINISTER!!!

Here is the pin-up for Fort Collins Comic Con this weekend:  Mr. Sinister and the Marauders.  This was a fun experiment for me in colors and palettes.  This was inspired by the greens used in many David Fincher movies, such as Fight Club and Zodiac.  The palette gives a sense of sickness.  Just like in Fincher's movies there is a sense of something very wrong here.  I hope that is portrayed in this image.
As for Fort Collins Comic Con, I will be there all day.  I am also presenting my thesis from my time at SCAD, Comic Books in the Classroom:  Using Comics for All ages Literacy.  The panel and presentation starts at 10am.

Digital Painting- Take 3: Failure

Well, here's take 3.  My impatience was getting to me.  I am chalking this up to a failure.  I, also, in reading to my children started studying one of their watercolored children's books.  I am going to try a new technique on this same image....that'll be take 4.  Coming soon!!!

Digital Paint: Take 2 - Thumbnail

This is a Thumbnail for my next digital paint.  I asked for suggestions on Twitter and Facebook last week and got one suggestion. So,  Vizarad this is for you!

Book Illustration Commission

Doing some book illustration.  It's kind of cool to get work the day or two after dropping business cards off at a local comic shop.  This has been a very fun project so far.  It was great getting back into pencil illustration.  More to come, hopefully.  Will know more soon.

Speaking of which, I will be appearing at the NEW Fort Collins Comic Con on September 12!  At the North Aztlan Community Center in Fort Collins, CO.  I will have three new prints, and will open a commission list soon!  STAY TUNED FOR DETAILS!!!!!!!!

Digital Painting: Take 1! HELP!!

Step by step by step by step.  I am trying this out.  I have this dream of becoming a digital painter, whether it's for myself, or for a profession.  Here is my first attempt.  If there is anyone out there who would like to critique the process and help me out, please do!  Any encouragement is also welcome.

World Card Experts and Cardistry

I have to thank De'vo for this opportunity.  I have been blessed with the opportunity to design some amazing decks, including Magicians Must Die with him.  This deck, by far, has to be my favorite that isn't MMD.  The design is killer, it looks amazing in motion (check out this video: Bicycle Cardistry in Motion, and the tuck is covered in foil and looks fantastic!!!  This deck will be available on Sunday for VIP members of the World Card Experts' website and probably not for long, most of De'vo's decks sell out within hours, and I don't believe this is going to be an exception.  Enjoy!

New Prints! and New Appearences!

Hi! I am going to be doing two new 11x17 prints for future shows.  These are the two.  I have put up the Groot before, but I am now making it an official print.
The Harley and Ivy is in celebration of the new decision by the Supreme Court to allow Marriage of all kinds in all states.  There is no more discrimination just because you want to marry the person you love.  A same sex partner now gets the same benefits in hospitals, healthcare, taxation, etc...that any other married couple gets. It's a MAJOR win for the USA and for the equal rights of ALL citizens!  Congratulations USA!

If you would like to purchase either of these prints, please contact me via facebook messaging, Twitter PM, or gmail.  I will also be at the Fort Collins Comic Convention on September 12th, and the Rocky Mountain Comic Con November 6 and 7.  Hope to see you all there, and thank you for the support!

The Atomic Agnostic aka- The Exploding Man

I would like you all to meet the Atomic Agnostic.  This is a story that has been in my head for a while, and I am working on a little preview story.  I am still working out the details of the story, and of the character, but I have always had this idea and I am starting to move forward with it.  Tell me what you think of this!

Denver Comic Con 2015 Review...kind of

Holy amazeballs!  What a convention.  Well, Denver Comic Conventions 2015 has wrapped up, and after about a week of recovery...I am STILL recovering.  It was an amazing weekend with amazing people, an amazing staff, volunteers, attendees, panels, panelists, artists, vendors, celebrities, etc...  I am still on cloud nine from the weekend.
For those of you that didn't know, I was selected to do the badge art for this year's Denver Comic Con.  It was a huge boost to the profile that I have in the local industry, and in the industry in general.  There were 101,500 people wandering around Colorado Convention Center last weekend with my art hanging around their necks.  I can't believe it.
The show was great for me, I was busy all weekend meeting people, shaking hands, signing badges, and selling badge related artwork.  I had trading cards, postcards, metal postcards, and the original inks framed with a metal print.  (I do still have a LOT of all of those left, so if you want any email me at jpeteranetz(at)gmail(dot)com

My plan is to talk more about my reactions to the weekend, the internet's reaction to the weekend, and if you want some of my thoughts, check out my facebook page: www.facebook.com/jpeteranetz

TARDIS Denver Comic Con Badges Day 11: The final Badge

TARDIS, the staple of Geekdom over the past 50 years.  Appropriate to end with for two reasons.  Number 1:  This is one of the most iconic items Geeks know and others don't.  Secondly, this weekend is going to feel like a whirlwind of time travel and excitement and it will be over too quickly.  This is the Monday Attendee badge.

I want to thank the Denver Comic Con and Pop Culture Classroom team for letting me do the badges this year after 4 years of asking (now I will stop nagging, you're welcome).  They have been supportive, helpful, and amazing to work with!  SEE YOU AT THE COLORADO CONVENTION CENTER TOMORROW!!!

The artwork was done solely by me (concept to completion).  I want to extend an invitation to the all the attendees to come visit me at booth 324 in merchant's mesa and get your badge signed.  I will have the original ink drawing of this badge framed and available that weekend with a one or eight hand printed and signed metal prints of the final image.  I will also have metal hand printed metal badges (eight total).  I will have 44 postcard size "polaroids" available (see my twitter feed @jpeteranetz for more on those).  And I will have trading card size images of each in packs of 5.  There will be special chase cards printed on silver, gold, and (if it works out) black foil card stock, and I will have sketch cards randomly inserted.

I look forward to seeing you all at Denver Comic Con Booth 324! May 23-25!!
I will be posting one design daily from now until Denver Comic Con.  And they will post as I see them available online.

Green Arrow! Denver Comic Con Badges Day 10

TV's Green Arrow has been garnering a lot of positive reviews since it started.  I believe DC has done some of the best TV series over the past decade.  Their movies leave a little something to be desired, but that is OK.  This is the badge for the Monday Volunteers and Programming.

Optimus Prime Denver Comic Con Badges Day 9

Meet the most powerful Transformer of our time.  Optimus will be on the badges of the Sunday Volunteers and Presenters.  I am very happy with how this came out...except for the top of the helmet, it's a little strange.

Malcolm Reynolds Denver Comic Con Badges Day 8

This is the badge for the Sunday Attendees.  They get to blast off with Malcolm Reynolds and his model Firefly...which I want.  I think it would be awesome to have a small scale version of the firefly.  If anyone wants to set that up....

Star Wars! Denver Comic Con Badges Day 7

Another one of my favorite badges.  I LOVE how the lightsaber came out, and I think the characters came out really well.  This one was fun figuring out the background colors, but when I finally did, this image just popped.  This badges is for the Saturday Voluteers and programming presenters.

Star Trek! Denver Comic Con Badges Day 6

I ddn't realize this at the time I drew this badge, but I feel like I am honoring a great legend with this badge.  Mr. Nimoy (who played Spock...I know, I know, all geekdom knows this) was a great inspiration for many actors, TV aliens, and people.  The exhibitors, Vendors, Guests, and Artists at the Denver Comic Con will have this inspiration on their badges the entire weekend.  To amend the paragraph below, the original of this badge was purchased and I will only have the prints available over the convention weekend.

Groovey TV Interview

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31EQDUk2t78

See that link?  That Link goes to an interview I did with Groovey TV, the OFFICIAL news of Denver Comic Con.  I love these guys.  They are a great interview, they are relaxed and just love comics and other AWESOME culture.  I hope you enjoy it...I make a fool of myself, but that's normal.  ENJOY!!

Brothers in Arms! Denver Comic Con Badges Day 5

Something I did NOT know until working on these badges...Battlestar Galactica was a "parody" of sorts to Star Wars.  And the Cylons were the Storm Troopers of that world.  So, here we are with a Storm Trooper and a Cylon.  I am a fan of this badge.  It's the only one with a word balloon, and, I believe it really helps make the point of the two franchises without directly saying anything.  This is the VIP pass for this year's con, so all you special people out there get a Storm Trooper bothering a Cylon.

SPIDER-MAN!!! Denver Comic Con Badges Day 4

Today, I get the pleasure of sharing my FAVORITE of the badges.  The Spider-Man badge, for some reason really speaks to me.  It is also a favorite of many of the people to whom I show the badges.  I was also able to request which badge got this design...well, I didn't request it, my three older girls did.  They wanted this badge, and they wanted it as the kid's badge.  So this is the 3-Day, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday Kid's badge.

The AVENGERS! Denver Comic Con Badges Day 3

What you are seeing above is the Saturday Adult to the 2015 Denver Comic Con.  This one is by far, one of my favorite badges.  I was able to take two of the newest Avengers, and make them the badge.  A HUGE bonus is they are both women.  The push by the Big Two to create, and allow their creators, to generate more diverse characters is a HUGE win for the comic book industry.  The amount of people being exposed to the medium, and characters that are being created are driving the industrty in EXACTLY the right direction!  THANK YOU FOR THE DIVERSITY!!

Back to the Future! DCC 2015 Badges Day 1

Congratulations on all the Denver Comic Con attendees this year that were able to attain their 3 Day passes for the greatest comic book show in, well Colorado, and the largest INDEPENDENT show of its kind.
For those of you that know me, THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT!  I am very grateful for everyone who has helped me get to a point where I was even considered to do such a massive project.  And thank you to the Denver Comic Con and Pop Culture Classroom teams for giving me the opportunity.  I feel like I can make this an "Oscar type" speech, but won't.

Anyway, what you are seeing above is the 3 day pass to the 2015 Denver Comic Con. I will have 44 postcard size "polaroids" available (see my twitter feed @jpeteraentz for more on those).  And I will have trading card size images of each in packs of 5.  There will be special chase cards printed on silver, gold, and (if it works out) black foil card stock, and I will have sketch cards randomly inserted.

A wedding at Denver Comic Con

As a wedding gift for a couple getting married at Denver Comic Con, I was asked to do an ad for them in the program for the weekend.  It looks like the image above...duh.  Anyway, everyone at the convention is invited, and it's the last major event of the weekend.  I am looking forward to making it down there, if at all possible.  There are going to be Stormtroopers as ushers, and you may get to see a LOT of celebrities from the convention. Hope you all enjoy the artwork.

Again, let me know if anyone needs commissions over the weekend.  I have a list going, I don't want it to fill if you want something.  Check out my commissions page for pricing. http://jnoblepeteranetz.blogspot.com/p/commissions.html

DENVER COMIC CON!!!!! and....COMMISSIONS!!

So, this is the first is a series of posts that is going to prepare you all for my appearence at Denver Comic Con this year.  As you all know, I am the featured artist this year.  That means I got to do the badge art, I helped design and create Captain Colorado (whom you see above), and I have been doing a TON of last minute artwork for the convention.  Over the next two weeks leading up to the convention, I am going to be showing off my work that you can find around the convention hall this year.

First up is the Captain Colorado Poster and program cover.  This is the new Denver Comic Con mascot.  You can find the program cover at Opening Ceremonies, and at the front door, and you can find the poster (which will be $5) at the Denver Comic Con merchandise booth, or at my table, which is in Merchant Mesa Booth 324.

Finally, I am opening up a commission list for the weekend.  You can email me at jpeteranetz@gmail.com if you would like a commission and pick it up at the convention.  You can look at my commissions page for pricing.  OR I am doing 11x17 or 8.5x11 inch watercolor pre-orders for an additional $20 over the color prices on the commissions page.
